Hendeler i Vann; Geo-Political landscapes, 2023

A series by Gitte Sætre that translates global conflicts, fragile alliances, and shifting borders into delicate, fluid paintings. Using the softness of watercolour, the works contrast the brutality of geopolitics with the vulnerability of human perception. The pigments bleed, merge, and resist control—mirroring the unpredictability of diplomacy, war, and negotiation. Through this fragile medium, Sætre offers a quiet but insistent reflection on power, fragility, and the human cost behind abstract strategies of global politics. Watercolours on paper 150 x 100 cm

Geopolitical Landscapes; Events in Water, 2024
Watercolors on paper, 150 x 100 cm

Hendelser i Vann
(Events in Water) explores the intersection of natural phenomena and human influence, using imagination as a tool to examine shared horizons. Weather plays a central role in the series, focusing on mirages, cloud formations, and atmospheric shifts. The sky becomes a dynamic canvas, reflecting both its inherent beauty and the subtle presence of unease. Set against the backdrop of the North Sea, where warships and helicopters punctuate the horizon, the weather—once neutral—has acquired political overtones. This transformation mirrors a broader cultural fixation on apocalyptic scenarios that influence political, aesthetic, and scientific perspectives. Water in the series acts as a mutable surface, responding to changing light, unexpected occurrences, and human control. It invites introspection, drawing out longings, distant memories, and moments of quiet meditation. A third space emerges in the work—a landscape suspended between reality and abstraction, elusive yet suggestive. Hendelser i Vann seeks to uncover the hidden connections within these environments, shedding light on the intricate relationships between na
ture, hum
anity, and the ephemeral.
This marks the beginning of a series that investigates the intersections of natural and geo-political landscapes, inviting viewers to engage with the complexities of the world and their place within it.
