​Luftskipet/The Zeppelin (2006-2011) ​

Arenaen (Luftskipet): The areana was originally an eye-catching, orange, mobile exhibition space made of plastic/tarpaulin. It was designed to be moved around between the municipalities of Sotra and Øygarden to bring contemporary art to the people. It was later permanently housed as a gallery in Straume. A site-specific, movable art space designed by MMW Architects. Created for the periphery ( municipalities west of Bergen) to bring contemporary art into landscapes and communities outside the cultural centers. Its lightweight and flexible design allows it to land in diverse environments—urban edges, rural spaces, and in-between zones—transforming each site into a temporary arena for dialogue, imagination, and encounter. Initiated and run by Gitte Sætre. Her MA- project.

During the project period, two newspapers were produced and distributed through the local newspaper Vest Nytt.

In August and September 2008, I curated the exhibition Og jorda skal ein gong minnast oss for våre gjerningar at Fjell Fortress — a location where history is physically present in the architecture. The fortress was built by the German occupation forces during the Second World War, using forced labour from Soviet prisoners of war. Working artistically in this environment meant engaging with a space marked by war, trauma, and the traces of human vulnerability. The exhibition explored how collective memory, wartime history, and media narratives shape our understanding of truth.
The project was part of the cultural heritage initiative Perler i Nordsjøløypa, developed by Gode Sirklar AS, which aimed to activate historical sites through contemporary art. The underground tunnels and the massive cannon well required extensive technical adaptation, and Bergen Center for Electronic Arts (BEK) provided specialised equipment and support.
Artistic contributionsThe exhibition brought together artists who responded to the site’s history, acoustics, and architecture in distinct ways:
  • Trond Lossius created spatial sound installations that interacted with the fortress’s raw concrete surfaces and resonant acoustics.
  • Aud Marit Skarrebo Holmen contributed text‑based and visual works exploring identity, impermanence, and the weight of the site’s history.
  • Arne Rygg presented a site‑specific work addressing power structures, historical narratives, and the void left in the aftermath of war.
  • Thomas Kvam and Erika Irmler worked at the intersection of political art, documentation, and media critique, challenging how sensationalism shapes public understanding of conflict and trauma.
Seminar: art, war and truth A central component of the project was a seminar that connected artistic perspectives with historical and societal analysis. I invited three speakers whose work engages deeply with war, justice, and public discourse:
  • Hanne Sofie Greve, judge and human rights expert, offered reflections on guilt, justice, and the long aftermath of war.
  • Per Christian Magnus, investigative journalist, discussed how media sensationalism can distort truth and influence public perception.
  • Ole Jacob Abraham, historian, provided a precise account of the fortress’s wartime history and the forced labour that took place there, grounding the artworks in historical fact.
The seminar created an important dialogue between art, history, and society, amplifying the exhibition’s thematic depth.
About the project Og jorda skal ein gong minnast oss for våre gjerningar was a formative project in my artistic practice. It combined site‑specific work, political reflection, and historical awareness, and laid the foundation for later projects in which I investigate how national narratives, power structures, and collective memory shape our contemporary moment.
