Woman Cleaning Palestine and Israel 2014 # 1
We encounter a young Norwegian woman who engages in significant political matters through geopolitical concerns. As she ages, her understanding deepens, yet she persists in her act of washing. Is this a parody? Or is it the essence of thought that matters—the collective and individual capacity to orient ourselves? The work invites multiple interpretations and engages in a dialogue with an era that demands renewed thinking, especially within art. In a time where images and language lose meaning by the day, writers like Boris Groys discuss the diminishing significance of traditions and the impact of the death of Enlightenment philosophy, placing individuals in an acute political situation. It's a place where individuals are left to their own bodies, vulnerability, and exposed lives. In many ways, 'Woman Cleaning' responds to these considerations. The woman, the artist, seeks out the difficult—the topics covered in newspapers. She stands close, looks even closer, and places her hand over it, directing her gaze towards the choices made and not made. It's a symbolic creation to activate an expanded awareness, posing questions such as: Where is humanity being led? Sætre's works, including 'Commission for the Good Solutions' at Nationale Theater (DNS) in Bergen, represent clear feminist contributions to the public debate on security policy. This feminist perspective is crucial for public discourse, as conflicts are predominantly commented on by men, often in uniform, and frequently from a militaristic perspective. In contrast to the public narrative, peace building holds strength in artistry. NATO Chief of Staff Stian Jenssen proposed a peace solution during Arendal's week, only to be compelled the next day to kneel and apologize for the specific proposal. Now, in the midst of an extreme escalation of the war in Palestine and Israel, it's time to bring forth the work 'Magic of Seven' and initiate conversations about peace and reconciliation."
